Sun Edison is making strong moves to solidify its market position and firm up confidence from shareholders.
The New York Public Service Commission (PSC) has suspended all caps on retail rate net metering for rooftop solar until the state’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) proceedings set values for distributed energy resources (DERs), RTO Insider reports.

The emerging technologies – such as passivated emitter, rear-contact (PERC) and metal wrap through (MWT) and even more efficient bifacial cells – will push leading module costs down to $0.48 per Watt in 2020.
“High-efficiency silicon modules are the key to capturing the distributed generation market because these modules maximize power output in a limited space, helping distributed generation compete with utility-scale photovoltaic plants,” said Tiffany Huang, Lux Research Associate and lead author of the report.
“The researchers have obtained the record-breaking efficiency of 22.1% on nanostructured silicon solar cells as certified by Fraunhofer ISE CalLab. An almost 4% absolute increase to their previous record is achieved by applying a thin passivating film on the nanostructures by Atomic Layer Deposition, and by integrating all metal contacts on the back side of the cell.”
“One of the strange things about yieldcos today is their incentive structure. Sponsors, of which there is usually only one, typically have an incentive to increase cash payouts as quickly as possible to reach incentive distribution rights.”
“The report will help new entrants chart a course for sustainable growth in the market and help existing participants consolidate their share. Overview of the thin film photovoltaic and batteries market Silicon solar cell prices have plummeted in recent years, leading to an unprecedented growth in the demand for thin film solar cells.”
“State and federal financial incentives have also helped, they say, but it’s the passage of a state law in 2013 allowing group net metering that has really made solar power more cost-effective and accessible.
The law allows renewable energy facilities to share surplus electricity they produce with other people, and get paid for it. The catch is the people using the electricity have to be customers of the same utility company as the facility’s owner.”
